IPLKings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians Super Over tie leads to confusion over rules

Sunday was an historic day for IPL as three super overs were played in a day with two of them between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians match.

The first tie match was between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). KKR finally won the match in a thrilling Super Over clash.Advertisement

In the second fixture of the day between Mumbai Indians and KXIP, the match ended in a tie in the regulation 20 overs. KXIP could only score five runs in the first Super Over but Shami bowled brilliantly to restrict MI to the same score.

As the match slipped into Monday and a second Super Over, team managements of MI and KXIP sought clariry over the rules for the 2nd Super Over. Fans wondered about the IPL Super Over rules and posted these questions on Twitter.

ICC rules on T20I Super Over:

Following the uproar over the outcome of the men’s World Cup final (50 over) in July when England last year were declared winners against New Zealand on boundary count, the International Cricket Council tweaked the super over rule for all its major events including T20 matches.

As per new rules, if the teams’ scores are equal after both innings have been completed (if applicable under DLS), then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over

is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or to complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied.
