Shaurya Chakra awardee, who fought terrorism in Punjab, shot dead in Bhikhiwind

Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Bhikhiwind, who bravely fought terrorists on several occasions, was shot dead by unknown men at his residence in Bhikhiwind, Punjab on Friday. The police have taken cognisance of the matter and launched an investigation into it. Meanwhile, Balwinder’s family has claimed the role of terrorists behind his killing.

According to reports, Singh had only opened the gate of a school that he used to run and two armed men were waiting for him outside. The moment he opened the gate, they fired around five shots at him. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead.

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Balwinder Singh had created an “army” of family members to take on pro-Khalistani terrorists in Tarn Taran district. He was attacked multiple times but he and his family managed to defeat the terrorists with great bravery.

He was a huge source of inspiration for people to defend themselves against terrorist attacks in Punjab. He had managed to kill several well-known militants, who attacked him with rocket launchers and hand grenades.

In 1993, Balwinder Singh, his brother and their wives were awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President for their bravery.
